Indoor Flat Green Pairs
On 1st march 2008 North West CSSC held their qualifying event for the CSSC National Indoor Bowls competition at Newton Hall Indoor Bowling Club, Blackpool. It was slightly disappointing to see that only 4 pairs entered the event but we must bear in mind that we are in the hotbed of Crown Green Bowling country and these players do tend to hibernate during the cold winter months.
It was decided that the competition would be run on a round robin event with all the teams playing each other over a 1¾ hour match. The first session saw Linda Hough & Jackie Butterworth (HASSRA North West) narrowly defeat Heather Walsh & Alan Turner (HASSRA North West) 18 - 11, whilst Steve Hartley & Dennis Foxton (HASSRA Fylde) built up and early lead on Paul Mann & Peter Tilley (Revenue & Customs) and then just managed to hold on to a 15 - 9 victory. In order to ensure that the final session matches on the day still live rubbers the winners of each match then played the losers of the other match.
After a break for lunch Paul Mann & Peter Tilley completely dominated their match against Linda Hough & Jackie Butterworth running out easy winners at 24 - 6, the other match saw Steve Hartley & Dennis Foxton come from 10 - 8 down against Heather Walsh & Alan Turner to win comfortably 22 - 10.
The Presentation
The standings after two sessions meant that Steve & Dennis had 4 points whilst Linda & Jackie and Paul & Peter had 2 points each, so any of these three teams were in a position to qualify from the event but Steve & Dennis were in the pole position and a victory for them would guarantee qualification.

Paul Mann & Peter Tilley started well against Heather Walsh & Alan Turner building a lead on 5 - 2. Heather & Alan then won 5 ends on the trot to take a 9 - 5 lead. Paul & Peter came back with a 2 & 3 score over the next two ends to lead 10 - 9. Heather & Alan scored a 1 at the next end and just managed to deliver the jack before the bell went to signal the final end of the match. Paul & Peter knew that they needed to win the end to keep their hopes of qualification alive but disaster struck as Heather & Alan picked up 4 shots to win 14 - 10.
In the other match Linda Hough & Jackie Butterworth knew that they had to win by 15 shots in order to overhaul Steve Hartley & Dennis Foxton. Linda & Jackie started well taking the first two ends. Steve & Dennis then won 4 of the next 5 ends to build up a 9 - 3 lead. Linda & Jackie got one back on the 9th end but once again Steve & Dennis took control of the match winning the last 4 ends to win the match 15 - 4 and cement their qualification to the National Finals at Nottingham in April.
Mike Wilson (North West Regional CSSC Chairman) attended the event in the afternoon and presented the trophies to the winners at the end of a long days bowling.
