Well this is my first year at running the North West Regional CSSC Sea Boat fishing qualifier. Before I start I would like to thank Paul Allen for the years of hard work keeping this competition going and wish him all the best. I hope he will be able to join us in the future as I know he loves the sport.
To the business in hand and what a lovely day we had with light winds and plenty of sun; it looked to be a very good day for tight lines. We all met up on Sydenham Avenue adjacent to the jetty. Everyone was there prompt and the draw was made for each team member in their boat. We had three boats for the day - "Jensen" skippered by Tony Parry, "Suveran" Skippered by Tony's son Simon and "Supreme" skippered by Steve. One member from each team would fish on a separate boat. With all the draws made and all ready to go just a few words from me about the rules and then it was all go and off we went to the boats.
Once all of us were on board off the boats set to find the first mark for the bate stop. This gave everyone chance to meet up with old and new adversaries, exchange tips (for some) and get their kit ready. I was on Suveran and it was not long before we were at drift pulling out string after string of mackerel. It was not long before we had all the fresh bait needed to fish. This year all the boats were to remain in line of sight of each other and the comp started fully at 11:00 am. It was not long before the first Dab's and Gurnards were making an appearance. The fishing looked good with nearly everyone now shouting out to Simon. Well this tended to be the order of the day with Dab's and Gurnard's the most prolific species followed by Whiting and on Suveran Pounting. Before we all knew it Simon shouted lines in and yes another comp had ended.
On the way back everyone speculated as to how they had done and who would be representing the North West in Plymouth next year. Simon had done me a great job and had added up all the points and his boat had produced some good fish and very close scores which would be reflected in all the results. On arriving at the Rhyl jetty we all made our way back to the cars and then over to the slipway pub just over the bridge. Here the landlady had put on a wonderful spread of sandwiches and chips and we were all soon getting stuck in to them, apart from me who had now to work out the scores for the day. It soon became apparent that Paul Darbyshire was the man to beat with his score of 231. Well it was not long and after a few last checks and a quick post-event meeting with all the competitors, the results were announced and this year there was less than 10 points separating 2nd and 5th. These scores were also reflected in the team results with 1 point sometimes separating teams.
To the results then and in first place with the 231 points was as mentioned Paul Darbyshire (with 59 fish caught from 7 species), in second place with 172 points Keith Lees (with 60 fish caught from 8 species) and in third place was Paul Whiteley with 171 points (with 50 fish caught from 8 species). As you can see plenty of fish caught but it was all down to the species caught not just the number of fish caught. Paul's result helped take his team in to first place with 493 points followed by HASSRA North West "A”"with 438 points (my team!) and finally Bolton Area 1 came in third with 415 points. A full list of all the results is with this report.
Can I now take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part for their participation, enthusiasm and for making my job worthwhile. I would also like to thank all the skippers for their time and professionalism and for all the help they gave to us all, the more experienced and novices alike. I would ask you all to spread the word and look forward to seeing you all again next year with some new faces I hope. Good luck to Paul, Keith and Paul in the final next year, I am sure we will see you before then. Well enough from me tight lines to all and see you all next year.
The results for the 2006 Sea Boat Fishing Regional Qualifier were as follows:
The team results were as listed above.
There were a total of 944 fish landed and recorded but this does not count the fish caught and returned uncounted for under size or full quota so I would think that over 1000 fish were caught throughout the day. I hope all this makes sense to you all.
